CEASE West,
Our Northern California Local Network (Northern California, Local Action)
About 100-150 people gathered at the Sacramento State University on August 9th for the twenty second annual August Peace Event. The mission of the event is to both further peace by remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki and knowing that nuclear war is not an alternative for our planet. Also the event is meant to energize activism for world peace. Every year the experience is a little different, but it’s always thoughtful and inspiring. CEASE was one of the numerous group sponsors for the event. Marilyn Pearce (far left) and Joyce Daniels (near left) provided information about CEASE to attendees, even displaying the CEASE website on Marilyn’s laptop. The Taiko Dan drummers from Davis ended the event loudly reminding everyone no more Hiroshimas or Nagasakis.
California CEASE Members Continue their presence
at CAEYC Annual Conference
The Center for Social Change – An activist presence at the CAEYC annual conferences. The promise to make change is a commitment that CEASE and other activist groups who create the Center for Social Change believe in and actively work at all year long. Last April, the Center provided a space for conversation and inspiration. Several powerful forums were provided: Chris Lamm and Adela Lopez spoke movingly about becoming anti-bias educators, Betty Jones inspired participants to build community, Janet Gonzales-Mena celebrated diversity, and a student from the Freedom Writer’s Foundation shared her story of growing from despair to success. As you can see from the photograph of the Center’s closing ceremony, once again the Center for Social Change filled our hearts.
CEASE Annual Peace Award 2007

The presentation of the CEASE Peace Award has been a tradition at all the CEASE seminars at NAEYC since 1983. The awards are given to honor those individuals and groups who have displayed extraordinary efforts to make the world a safer place for children and families. From activists, organizers and classroom teachers, from authors and storytellers, from professors and librarians - the many wonderful and unique contributions of CEASE members to our work are honored annually. Last year the awards were presented to Kate Donnelly and Clay Colt (near left) of the progressive Donnelly/Colt Company and to John Surr (far left with Lucy Stroock, presenting), a long time CEASE member and activist for children’s issues.
