Media On, Media Off: Ways to Promote Children’s Positive Development
Lucy Stroock introduces Cease Panel members, Geralyn McGlaughlin, Diane Levin, Joyce Daniels, and Sharon Davisson.
Panel members each shared a story illustrating the effects, both positive and negative, of media on the learning and development of young children.
The participants were then invited to focus on each issue in round-table discussions, facilitated by CEASE members. One of the participants shared the following with us, “The round-table discussions were awesome. I liked the equality – the lack of hierarchy. Everyone shared their ideas, even the students.” The outcome of these lively and thoughtful discussions will appear in our Spring Newsletter.
CEASE 30th Year Founders Award

Mary was recognized for her creation of the CEASE FYIs which “vividly challenge war and the inequity of our federal budget. . . Your life is an example of total commitment to the well-being of children. . .”
CEASE Annual Peace Award Recipients
Dr. Alice Sterling Honig
Craig Simpson presents the CEASE 2009 Peace Award to Dr. Alice Sterling Honig in honor of her long career as teacher and author. She has guided teachers and parents to understand “how to create caring human beings through modeling love and acceptance” Dr. Honig teaches us that “the care we give our youngest reflects the world we want to have. Peace begins with a loving attachment for infants.”
The family of our founder, Peggy Schirmer
The family of our founder, Peggy Schirmer, received the CEASE 2009 Peace Award in honor of a continuing devotion to creating a better world.
Peggy’s granddaughters Danielle, Maria and Eleni shared family anecdotes and inspirational poetry with the appreciative audience.
Peggy’s daughter, Audrey Schirmer’s heartfelt and deeply moving Peace Award acceptance speech quieted the room. She reminded us all of our commitment to rid the world of the threat of nuclear war and to build a safe and healthy world for children.
